Choice of care and treatment is a fundamental pledge of  "The NHS Constitution" published in January 2009. This means that you have a choice about where you are treated.

When you and your GP agree that you need to be referred to a hospital consultant you can choose to be treated at any hospital or clinic that meets NHS standards. This includes any NHS providor and many private hospitals, offering everything from treatment for cataracts to open-heart surgery.
